WHAT HAPPENS IN EARLY CHILDHOOD MATTERS FOR A LIFETIME
HIGH QUALITY ECE IS AN INVESTMENT IN THE FUTURE
There is significant evidence that investment in high quality ECE can bring economic returns of around 10 times its costs. Some benefits come from enabling women’s participation in the workforce. Most are derived from children’s later school achievement, labour force participation and positive social and health outcomes.
The economic benefits associated with high quality ECE include:
- lower costs for schooling through less need for extra learning support and other interventions
- benefits to their peers’ learning by fewer disruptions in class and greater peer-to-peer support
- reduced health costs
- reduced justice system costs through lower crime rates
- decreased social and economic inequalities, including gender inequalities for women and children
- increased tax revenue.
High quality ECE provides the most effective use of government funding because it has evidence-based positive outcomes for children. The long-term benefits of those outcomes create a public good that all taxpayers benefit from.Posted on 30/08/2017 by Karen Craig
